Educational Assessment
Milestones Educational Therapy is committed to providing comprehensive and highly individualized educational assessments. An educational assessment is helpful in identifying your child’s strengths, areas of difficulties and current level of functioning. Our assessment includes the following:
- Parent interview
- Standardized testing (the duration of the assessment can vary according to age however most assessments will take approximately four hours. Assessments are usually scheduled over two days).
- Classroom observation (optional)
- Comprehensive written report
- Feedback with parents to review the results
Cognitive Abilities Screening
Learning is the process of acquiring knowledge or information. During the learning process, students need to retrieve and process information and evaluate what information is valuable and what is not. Research has shown that cognitive skills and abilities combine to influence learning and performance. These cognitive skills include quality of attention, processing of visual or auditory information, thinking speed, and memory quality.
Most schools do not assess a student’s cognitive strengths or limitations which directly impact learning and academic performance. At Milestones we effectively identify relevant cognitive strengths and weaknesses by measuring the following areas:
- Selective Attention
- Working Memory
- Processing Speed
- Visual Processing
- Auditory Analysis
- Judgment & Reasoning
- Word Attack Skills
- Spelling
After the screening, we will determine whether a standardized assessment is warranted. In addition, recommendations and necessary referrals will be made.
Kindergarten Readiness Screening
Deciding to start kindergarten can be a confusing time for parents, however our kindergarten assessment can provide objective information in guiding your decision. Our assessment is designed to measure a child’s functioning through various developmental tasks. The developmental skills that are measured are usually considered stepping stones for success in school.
